It all started over dinner with the uncles and our friendly kitchen runner, Hong. Apparently the thing to do in China at dinner is to get ridiculously drunk and then eat. Dad concurs. Anyway, I've since introduced the locals (and by this, I mean the Chinese staff at the Sun Palace) to some good old Brooklyn Brewery beers from New York so we're swigging on deliciousness over dinner. All of a sudden, most likely out of pure boredom, Uncle Peter decides to proclaim, "I bet Yon could totally take you down in a drinking competition," to Hong. This is apparently the funniest thing he's ever heard. He retorts after a grand display of buffoonery, "I can beat her three to one! and then after that, I'll take you down too!"
Uncle Jimmy gets up from the table and goes on a beer run. An hour later, we're sitting safely at home (b/c I said, no drinking and driving guys!) with two 12-packs of Corona in true Mexican spirit. So for Hong to win, he needs to actually finish off 18 beers, while I sip along to 6 cervezas.
I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story...
[Picture note: Hong 8 beers in...]
[Picture note: Yon 5.5 in, not counting the 2 at dinner... and happily playing with the caps of my fallen contender while finishing off my winning beer]

Hmmm. You start by saying it simply isn't true that guys can drink more than girls then go on to describe how you had 6 beers and Hong had 18. That doesn't really support your case does it, it just means men can't drink 3 times more than girls!
ReplyDeleteI should apologize for not making this clear. Hong ended the night at the 8 when he fell asleep at the table. I should also point out that he was hung over for TWO days afterwards and that he ended up losing his glasses b/c he placed them in the mixed nuts jar while drunk.
ReplyDeleteI, on the other hand finished 8 beers by the end of the night and didn't want to look like a crazy alcoholic to my uncles and left as the victor. I don't think I could have had 18 beers myself, but I know I could easily have had more than poor Hong.
So all in all, you're technically right. That I didn't actually drink MORE than him that night, but it was implied that I could... or I did a poor job of making that implication :(
Oh, okay, then point proven but you just left out vital information! Drinking contest first thing on the agenda when you next visit Shanghai. I can see your blog post already - a photo of me slumped over a table and you perfectly sober, grinning like a Cheshire cat.
ReplyDeleteYon! I had no doubt in my mind that you could take down puny Hong in a drinking match. It would have been funny if you got a front view of the poor fellow so we can all see his Asian glow :)
ReplyDeleteAlso, the Brooklyn Brewery beers are my fave. I had the winter lager last night and was enjoying it thoroughly.
@WoAi- I can't wait! And I'll be reserving a room at the WoAi suites (instead of staying at the crazy China house again. Would Tommy room with me? ) haha :)
ReplyDelete@Kathleen- I didn't want to disgrace the poor boy more! And BK Brewery everything is good! I just recently tried their Penant Ale. SO tasty!
